WHAT DOES 18 Karat GOLD MEAN?

Gold comes in a variety of karats which is the system used to measure gold purity. If you’re purchasing 18 karat gold jewellery, this means that your jewellery is made up of approximately 75% pure gold with the remaining 25% a mixture of metal alloys used to harden the gold for everyday wear. Pure gold, which is 24 karat gold, is a very soft metal therefore to ensure its durability and to ensure your gold does not bend with wear it is mixed with various metal alloys.

WHAT DOES 14 Karat GOLD MEAN?

Similar to 18 karat gold, if you’re purchasing 14 karat gold jewellery, this means that your jewellery is made up of approximately 57.5% pure gold with the remaining 42.5% a mixture of metal alloys used to harden the gold for everyday wear.

WHAT DOES 9 Karat GOLD MEAN?

Similar to 18 and 14 karat gold, if you’re purchasing 9 karat gold jewellery, this means that your jewellery is made up of approximately 37.5% pure gold with the remaining 62.5% a mixture of metal alloys used to harden the gold for everyday wear.

WHY IS 18 KARAT GOLD JEWELLERY MORE EXPENSIVE THAN 14 KARAT OR 9 KARAT?

The higher the ratio of pure gold used compared to the mixture of other metal alloys, the higher the price will be. 18 karat gold contains approximately 75% of pure gold therefore in comparison to 14 karat and 9 karat which contain less, it will be more expensive due to the ratio of gold to metal alloys.
